But Would Jesus Wear Lipstick?

On Tuesday, Obama criticized McCain's economic policies as similar to those of President Bush, saying: "You can put lipstick on a pig ... it's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still going to stink after eight years."
The McCain campaign contended that the comments were directed at Palin, the GOP's first woman on a presidential ticket. In her acceptance speech last week, she had referred to herself in a joke about lipstick being the only difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull.
Accusing Obama of "smearing" Palin in "offensive and disgraceful" comments, the McCain campaign demanded an apology — though McCain himself used the folksy metaphor a few times last year, including once to describe Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's health care plan.

OK. So what's the big deal. Palin has already said that the only difference between herself and a pit-bull bitch is some lipstick. ( Yuppers, I have already been informed that I am not being fair to pit bulls.)Wowsers..... what is the big fucking deal. Obama made an analogy. It was OK for McShit to say, "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno." And it was OK for the Old Fish to mumble....

"At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt."

Gimmee a break. If she wants to wear lipstick, I say let her. Gees, if it works for a pig, and it works for a pit bull...........................................I mean, she can use all the help she can get!

"Say, if you put lipstick on that pig, she would be a great VP"

Well, it may be ok for Obama to use that line, but did it endear him to any of the women who are walking away from him in droves? When a guy gets poll numbers that shows he's losing Independent women, Hispanic women, and the Catholic vote....he should choose his words more carefully. That's just smart campaigning, and he's not playing it so smart.

So...keep up with the misogynistic attacks on Palin, and watch the Republican base and women (especially senior women who have spent their lives being considered second class citizens) come flocking around McCain/Palin to secure the Republican vote. The more Obama makes remarks like this, the more money comes rolling in for John McCain.

I'm looking at this completely in the realm of campaign strategy, nothing more. Something needs to change if Obama is going to win this race, I suggest he change the guy who's writing his campaign stump speeches for him.

If they'd switch from Obama to a woman who isn't pro-choice at all, then were they really for Obama in the first place?

If it's just strategy, regardless of whether it's dumb or not -- and for the record, I don't think it is -- then its misogyny is a completely different thing. It's not, but I'm a dude, so what do I know.

okjimm, your post is funny.

Kiddoo, first, the quote was taken out of context:

"John McCain says he's about change too," Obama told a crowd here. "So I guess his whole angle is: Watch out, George Bush -- except for economic policy, healthcare policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics, we're really going to shake things up in Washington.

"That's not change. That's just calling the same thing something different. But you can put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change, and it's still going to stink after eight years." -Obama

Secondly, Palin really lost me when SHE did the pit-bull/lipstick analogy. I thought it was really dumb..... and trite.

Thirdly, McCain used the same reference to Hillary and her health care plan....the same analogy...+

"McCain too has invoked pigs in criticizing opponents. When Clinton released her healthcare plan last year, the Arizona senator portrayed it as a remake of the one she proposed when her husband, Bill Clinton, was president. "I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," McCain said.

ME, I'm sorry.... but I think the Republican method of campaigning sucks.... read the whole story....
They revel in spin and misquote and misdirection....

"McCain released a TV ad that said his opponent's lone accomplishment on education was legislation to teach comprehensive sex education to kindergartners. "Learning about sex before learning to read?" an announcer asks. "Barack Obama: Wrong on education. Wrong for your family."

As an Illinois state senator, Obama voted for a bill that revised the state's standards on sex education, from kindergarten through 12th grade. Obama says sex education should be "age appropriate," as determined by teachers and parents.

"It is shameful and downright perverse for the McCain campaign to use a bill that was written to protect young children from sexual predators as a recycled and discredited political attack against a father of two young girls," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said.

"Last week, John McCain told Time magazine he couldn't define what honor was," Burton said. "Now we know why."

I know you do not like Obama..... but I am developing such a distaste for McCain it is unbelievable. I am starting to think that Sarah Palin is just a Trojan Horse: They will use her during the election and she will back off the VP job citing her 'family ' commitments, allowing McCain to 'Choose' a new VP suitable to him, but not the voters. I think her whole candancy is an end around. There is no way a political machine selects her..... there is no way I believe she was the most suitable VP candidate.

I stood off the sidelines during the democratic primaries; I actually favored Hillary over Barack..... but I will never vote for anyone associated with this Republican Administration or there successors.

And I still love you. So there!

I guess we can look at it this way: perhaps women in North America will all learn to hunt endangered species whilst wearing a mini-skirt and fuck-me shoes.

break me up, Diva!

I am just outraged by the McCain ads. They seriously make me want to retch.

And I see nothing in the character, experience, and skill of Sarah Palin that comes close to that of Hillary Clinton.

I just caught this on Slate

http://www.slate.com/id/2199140/

.. she supports shooting wolves from planes. Now I am not a hunter... but have a bunch of ethical hunters in the family (hey, if we did not hunt deer in Wisconsin....they would take over the state) who pride themselves on sports conservation ethos. Shooting anything from a plane does not fit that ethos. Predator control can be done with other methods if necessary.

I do not like either one of them at all.

Kiddoo, first, the quote was taken out of context:

That may be true, but what context are his supporters putting it? That's what's being seen all over the Internet, pictures of Palin and a pig or the quote "A Pig with Lipstick" and a picture of Palin underneath. It will be his supporters who take him down more than Obama, himself. When they attacked Palin with the obviously false rumor about her baby not being her own (they wouldn't want to actually check facts before spreading that slime, would they?), the Republicans closed ranks and protected her and thanks to the Obama supporters, McCain secured his base, the base that was showing a lot of cracks.

There is no way a political machine selects her..... there is no way I believe she was the most suitable VP candidate.

That's because you are looking at this in the eyes of a Democrat. Sarah Palin did exactly what they wanted her to do, he excited their base and secured it. Where there was little joy for most Republicans in their nominee, Sarah Palin came out swinging and acted just like the Republican she is....and they love it. This pick wasn't about getting votes away from Obama, but strengthening their base...but with the Obama supporters going after her like they did, they got the added pleasure of watching Independent women walk away from Obama and go for McCain. It's all about smart politics and Obama isn't playing smart politics, IMO.

And I see nothing in the character, experience, and skill of Sarah Palin that comes close to that of Hillary Clinton.

I agree, which is why Clinton should have been at the top of the ticket and why Obama made a really bad choice not putting her on the ticket as his VP. He gained nothing by picking Biden (who I like, btw), and all to lose by turning his back on Hillary. It was a very bad political decision, IMO.

Randal said:If they'd switch from Obama to a woman who isn't pro-choice at all, then were they really for Obama in the first place?

Not true, women don't vote on one issue and they don't vote on gender. If they did, Hillary would have had such a lead, not even Obama's cheating at the caucuses could have saved him. They may not like Palin's stand on abortion, but she is on the ticket as VP, not President. It looks as if Obama is trying to run against Palin for President. Making Palin the top of the ticket by bashing her does nothing to help him look Presidential...he just looks like a school yard bully wanting to pick on a girl. Dumb move, politically.

Traditional Catholics, on the other hand, do vote on one issue and that's abortion. That's why Obama is having such a hard time getting a majority of the Catholic vote, one I think he was trying to get by selecting Biden, who is a practicing Catholic, as his VP. Believe me, that drives me just as crazy as anyone else. I was appalled that the Catholic Church seemed to back George Bush, all because of that one issue.

Ok...I'm going to slink away before all of you get mad at me and okjimm kicks me off his blog for good.

I'd wager that most people who would be bothered by this aren't even on the internets. It's the same with male Palin supporters who are willing to jump on the 'Dems are sexist!' bandwagon while praising her MILFiness.

I don't think this particular episode has the staying power of say, the mellow Dukakis fuckup in 1988.

he just looks like a school yard bully wanting to pick on a girl. Dumb move, politically.

So going after a female politician would be viewed by most in that exact light?

Yeah, that's mostly rhetorical, for, sexist or not, that's sadly what most people will instinctively assume through centuries of accepted mores. Women are meek and cry and men, well, hunt the moose.

Which is why I'm afraid that Biden will be instructed to be extra nice and keep nostril flaring to a minimum.

I've heard that being nice all the time is smart politics too. Where did that get us in 2000 and 2004? I like some comedy. Okay, okjimm, you can kick Nunly off your blog now. ;-)

I guess it would be viewed that way as the same number of people who viewed anyone who said anything against Obama was a racist. Ironic, isn't it?

No, what lost us the elections in 2000 and 2004 was stupid candidates who didn't utilize the best asset the Democratic Party had...Bill Clinton. Gore was afraid to have Bill Clinton on the same stage with him while campaigning...you know, the same guy who brought us almost 8 years of a great economy, peace, prosperity, all that good stuff. Then Kerry did the same thing. He didn't call in for Bill Clinton's help until the very end (when BC was still recovering from open heart surgery). I guess he saw how the people in the US and around the world reacted when they heard BC was in trouble with his health. Not to mention, Kerry refused to fight for the job. He had money set aside to investigate any election abnormalities on election day. There were plenty in Ohio. If he won Ohio, he would have won the election. What did he do? He folded.

Oh...not to mention, he depended on the youth vote to take him over the top. The youth didn't show up (the bastards!). Who is Obama depending on? The youth vote...let's see if they show up this time. I think it was Donna Brazille who told Hillary supporters to go, the DNC doesn't need them. So they went...and guess what, things aren't looking so hot.

I still think Obama can pull this off if he shapes up his campaign...but his supporters should start paying attention to what they are doing to hurt him, and that's slamming anyone who doesn't like him with insults, or telling them to get lost. ;-) How will that help to convince them to leave McCain's camp? It won't.

Sounds quite possible but from what I've seen of the woman she's likely to pull a Lucrezia Borgia on McCain's ass. It probably wouldn't be wise for him to accept a mooseburger from her if he wins (steals) the election.

Ya, that's gonna happen right after they raise the Titanic! Sheesh! ;)

ME.... it no longer has anything to do with Obama or Clinton, as far as I am concerned. John McCain gets sleazier and sleazier as the days go by. Palin is just a hired pit-bull. She admitted it. She has NO qualifications to be anywhere close to the White House. She can tour the place like all the other DC visitors.

That's it. There are two months left to make sure we do not have another Republican admin. Plain and simple. Whatever happend two months ago..... is gone.... what lies in front of us will shape the rest of my children's lives....... and there is nothing about McCain/Palin that I want in that future.

So let's have a beer and some cheese!

okjimm - great post. Randal great comment.

ME - I have a question. But before I pose it, I have some assumptions I need to make here:

1 - You don't like Obama
2 - You are a practicing Catholic
3 - You are likely voting for McCain/Palin

I understand that you are more than upset about the treatment that Sarah Palin is getting, but if in fact your vote is for McCain/Palin are you cognizant of what it is you are voting for? Do you four, possibly eight more years of war and a disastrously mismanaged economy? Is making abortion illegal because the Pope considers it a sin worth that much? Please reconsider your priorities and drop the stop-picking-on-Palin mantra. She's a politician and a big girl. She can take it.

DivaJood said...

Actually, and I say this with some authority, Nunly does NOT like Obama. But she is going to vote the Shit From Shinola ticket which means that Jood/Nunly actually have a shot at winning. Scares me.

Still, I don't think Hillary Clinton would have been the right choice for VP. I suspect that she will be offered a Cabinet post should Obama win; but right now, she's most effective in the Senate.

As for Palin - I think she can easily be picked on; the issues alone warrant picking on her. I DON'T believe we should pick on her children. Perhaps they will grow up to be Democrats.

But on the issues: she approves hunting wolves, bears and other animals from airplanes; she is anti-abortion; she supported the Bridge to Knowwhere; she's politically in bed with Ted Stevens and Abramoff; she abused her powers while in office. She's a bad apple who wears spiked heels well.

okjimm said...

Ya, what Diva said. I agree. The VP spot would have been a step down for Hill. I agree, too, that she probably can wield more independant power in the Senate than even a cabinet post. I think she would make an excellent Sec of State or even Att. General, other than that, she should stay in the Senate.

I just wish SHE was really out there bashing McIdiot.

It really is time to rally the troops and put this country back on a really Democratic basis.
