Brother, can you spare some change....

Heard the cranes flying south this morning. A neat trilling sound, less raucous than geese.  Course, can't see them... but you know that they are up there.   It is a nice sound on cold days... and it gives the promise, too, that they will be back.  Seems that they are easier to see in the spring sky, but maybe that is just me.
It reminded me of stuff in the fall.... though, the crispness of the air, glasses fogging as you enter a warm house, the smell of my grandmother's apple pie, helping my mother grind the fixings for her turkey dressing.  The days are increasing shorter... the darkness now comes in late afternoon, the bare trees shake in a cold wind... and I am sad that another season is at an end.... and that I am older now... and that there will be a set amount of seasons left for me.  I shrug off the thought, cause it really is no never mind and there is nothing to do about it anyways.  Best to think of all the sounds, and smells, and foggy glasses in the past and be happy for them.

So....there are sounds... that fill a heart, a soul and even when they are sad, they are good, because whether I am here or not... the cranes will return.  It's all just changes... and changes will be good, if we want them to be.

I was born by the river
In a little tent
And just like the river
I've been running ever since

It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh, yes it will

It's been too hard living
But I'm afraid to die
I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh yes it will

I go to the movie, and I go downtown
Somebody keep tellin me "don't hang around"
It's been a long, a long time coming,
But i know a change gonna come
Oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
I say brother help me please
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees

There's been times that I thought
I wouldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh, yes it will

It does seem that Fall engenders thoughts about both the past and the future. I do agree that pondering what can't be changed is worthless. Stay warm, I hope you don't get snowed upon.

I figure I started out with a set number of seasons allotted to me. And now that I have wasted so many before, I hope to not waste any more. That's the hope anyway. Well see what reality thinks of it.

Nice post. Very nice - Sam was an excellent touch.

I believe the best part of autumn is that it gives us time to reflect on how to use our time wisely. Seeing everything broken down to its essence still leaves us with the mystery of what lies beneath.

down here in floriduhhh, we only know the seasons are changing when the northerners start bitching about the weather.

i haven't heard sam cooke in ages. what a short and tragic life he led.

Great post!

Got to admit the increasing number of grey hairs on head edging out the small amount of brown I have left is a downer, along with my kids getting older but to the point I have to worry about my son getting laid is enough to frazzle my nerves but my general "screw it" attitude eventually take over again.

It is my hope that Autumn will one day becomes my hint to get in my car and drive south.

It really is "no never mind." I believe more and more in the Power of Now. If I worry about another season passing, will I be able to wrench all the joy out of the one I'm in? No. I don't even know my real age anymore because I froze myself in time about 10 years ago. What's the point of fretting about passage of time. We're all on that train.

I'm going out now to do a community rake up and I'm going to enjoy the cold, soggy day!

You have a marvelous one, Jim!

But doesn't autumn, and then winter, at least these days, equal another Packer Subpar Bowl win?

Always look on the bright side of life.

Ah sweet man, that is such a great song! It's been a shit week but between the music on your post and the mental image of the cranes...I feel a lot better.

Here I am a day late and a dollar short. I thought your post would hit me up for some cash. Gary at the local liberry claims that starting December 10th the days get a smidgen longer in the pm. I haven't checked into this, thinking the 21st is the start of the uphill slide to summer, but it's a nice thought.

Loved the Sam Cooke song. he was great and had his own unique voice. Lyrics are appropriate for this time of year.
